Manual Therapy
Manual physical therapy is a broad category of treatment that encompasses almost any “hands-on” treatment. This ranges from soft tissue work, stretching, joint mobilizations, traction techniques, mobilization with movement, and many others. I have been fortunate to have trained under, and worked with many experienced manual therapists and over the years have found a subset of techniques that work well in my hands.
Currently, as an adjunct instructor at Husson University in their PT program, I am also getting the opportunity to assist in several musculoskeletal courses, helping to keep me up to date on the latest research and hone my skills on new or different treatment techniques. With manual therapy, it all starts with a good, thorough evaluation. This will make all the difference when it comes to applying the best treatment in the right area to help get pain under control and address the structures that were the culprit in causing the problem in the first place.
While they can be powerful techniques, it almost always then leads to the next phase, exercise!
